The Forerunner 170 Music is the standard Forerunner 170 with one addition that changes how you run: built-in music storage for Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. Which music services work with it?
Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. All three require an active subscription on a tier that allows offline downloads (Spotify Premium, Amazon Music Unlimited, Deezer Premium). Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Tidal are not supported. Local MP3 files can be transferred from a computer using Garmin Express if you don't use a streaming service.
What's the difference between this and the standard Forerunner 170?
Three things: music storage (Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer with offline downloads), Wi-Fi connectivity for fast playlist syncing, and the $50 higher price ($349.99 versus $299.99). Everything else — sensors, GPS, battery life, display, training features, Garmin Pay — is identical between the two watches.
Does music playback affect battery life?
Yes. Streaming audio to Bluetooth headphones during a GPS-tracked workout reduces battery life from 20 hours to roughly 8–10 hours of continuous GPS with active music. For everyday smartwatch use without GPS, music has a smaller effect — expect 7–8 days instead of 10 if you listen for an hour daily.
How many songs can it hold?
Roughly 500 songs, depending on bitrate. The watch has 4 GB of total memory, of which about 3.5 GB is available for music after the operating system and apps. Most users sync a couple of running playlists rather than their full library.
Will my Bluetooth headphones work with it?
Most Bluetooth headphones pair without issue — AirPods, Powerbeats, Shokz, Jabra, generic wireless earbuds. The watch acts as the audio source. Volume and track control happen from the watch screen. Older Bluetooth 4.0 and below devices may have shorter pairing range; Bluetooth 5.0+ headphones perform best.
How accurate is the GPS?
The Forerunner 170 Music receives signals from three satellite systems — GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo — and uses the strongest available. This is more accurate than single-system GPS watches in tree cover, urban areas, and canyons. It does not have multi-band (L1+L5) GPS, which is reserved for the Forerunner 265 and above.
Will it fit my wrist? Does it work with iPhone and Android?
The included silicone band fits wrist circumferences from 126 to 203 mm (roughly 5.0 to 8.0 inches). The 43 mm case sits low-profile thanks to the 1.2" display diameter and 41-gram weight. The band uses 20 mm industry-standard quick-release pins. It pairs with both iPhone and Android via the free Garmin Connect app; reply-from-watch for text messages is supported on Android only.
